Payne’s Gray is a deep, cool, blue-grey pigment popular in painting as a more subtle, atmospheric alternative to pure black. Originally created by 18th-century watercolorist William Payne, it is often a mixture of Ultramarine, Mars Black, and sometimes Crimson.
