DEADLINE AND FORMAT FOR TITLING YOUR ARTWORKS

Please email your titles to me by Friday 12th September. As discussed pleased supply to me in this format, including the words 'title' and 'medium'

Mike Stones

Title: Arcadia

Medium: Acrylic

£125

The font or size doesn’t matter; it will automatically format when I put it into my template. What does matter is the way it's written, so just as above please without any extra info - this makes it a quicker process for me to copy and paste with hundreds of titles to process - thanks.

DIFFERENT NAMES

Please make sure each of your artworks has a different name to each of your other artworks - if not this can cause confusion in the processing of selling artworks.

HOOKS ON BACK OF ARTWORK

In order to hang an artwork it needs a hook or wire/string on the back. Off the shelf frames usually come with a hook on the back so are fine to use.

If you have a canvas it is possible to use the ridge of the frame to hang the work, so no need for wire or string.

If you artwork does not have any hanging device on the back I have picture hanging D-rings and wire in the studio you can use.

LABELLING YOUR ARTWORKS ON

THE BACK

Please write (perhaps on tape or a label) on the back of your 4 artworks with your name, the title of the artwork and please also write '4th Artwork' on the one which will be placed away from the other 3.

EXTRA ARTWORKS IN CRADLES

If you are displaying extra work in the cradles please label and title these yourself (hand written is fine) - making sure your name, title of work and price is on a label on the back.

There will be a few cradles dotted around the exhibition. Generally these will be a mix of artist work. I have some cellophane bags to protect these artworks in the studio that you can use, also available online (ask me for details).

DETAILS FOR CARDS THAT YOU WANT TO SELL

If you have cards for sale there will be a blank form available for you to write the details and prices of each card - so when sales are being processed at the desk it will be easier for those managing sales to process.

We have good space between the walls so I have asked Marine Workshops for as many tables and extra display facilities as are available to us. Please supply your own boxes etc for displaying your own cards on the tables.

IDEAS FOR HOW TO TITLE YOUR ARTWORKS

I have taken a few examples from artist’s work to use as examples here - I have broadly categorized their approach:

Often artists will describe what’s in the artwork, the place or the event

  • Beach Scene at Trouville

  • At the Races in the Countryside

  • Luncheon at the Boating Party

  • Blue Dancers

  • Children paddling, Walberswick

  • Along the Ridge, South Downs

  • The Bigger Splash

  • Small Tree Near Cairo

  • View from the Top

  • View of the Seine

  • Spring

  • The Port at Newhaven

  • Coney Island

  • Dusk

  • Morning Dew

You could also describe the scene in a sociological way

  • Family Reunion

  • The Poor Fisherman

  • Mother and Daughter

The Feeling of the artwork

  • The Angry Landscape

  • Tranquility

  • The Wait of Silence

  • Hibernation

Leaving the artwork untitled

  • Sometimes artists will title their work 'Untitled' in order to avoid directing the viewer. Abstract artists might do this in order to avoid implying a representational character to their work which can drive the viewer to try and work out the content.

  • Another way to do this is to number artworks: Composition VI

IDEAS FOR HOW TO PRICE YOUR ARTWORK

Starting point

One starting point is to consider how much the artwork cost you to put together - so for example the cost of the mount and the frame, you may also decide to add in the cost of a class and then double it - just an idea to start thinking about price

So for example mount £10, frame £22, cost of a class £23 = £55 x 2 = £110 (this could be your starting point for costing)

Then of course it depends on how you feel about your work.

You could decide to keep the price lower which might make the artwork accessible to more people.

With experience you begin to work out what people will pay for your work, you could also factor in where the artwork is on display, this might help inform the price.

Also think about how you have felt visiting galleries and what you thought about the prices. Visiting Artwave venues might also help inform you, looking at how others price their work.

Giclee prints for sale

If you are selling prints of an artwork and the original of the same artwork is also for sale, then of course the print should cost less. A limited edition print might be set at around 30 - 40% of the cost of the original (these are your choices and only suggestions here).

Signed limited additions of prints

A way of adding perceived value to a print is to sell it as a limited addition - so say 1/25 (this then has to be the maximum amount you get printed).

You don't have to price work

You don’t have to sell your work so please just leave the price off the end of your label info if you prefer to exhibit without selling.

Finally

Apologies there is no definitive answer here - this is a very difficult process and there is no exact way of knowing or formulating

DROPPING OFF ARTWORK AT THE GALLERY

When to drop off

Dropping your work off at the Marine Workshops

Wednesday 24th September between 11am - 1pm.

If you can’t drop the work off yourself please arrange for it to be dropped off. Getting artwork delivered at this time allows those putting the exhibition up to make judgements round the amount of work and the space available.

The back of the building access for drop off

Last year we used the back of the building to drop off our artworks meaning we can drive close to the back doors. There is now a barrier to this back entrance carpark so I am waiting to hear back to confirm that we can still get in this way - I will confirm asap.

Storing your packaging

I will supply large black bin bags for you to store your packaging for when the show is over and you pack away your work. There is a room we can use to store bits and pieces and the packaging can stay in there.

You will also need to write your name on your own bin bag - I will supply tape to write on and a marker pen for this.
