MARINE WORKSHOPS / NEWHAVEN

EXHIBITION INFORMATION

AUTUMN EXHIBITION DATES

We have hired the Crypt from:

Wednesday 26th June - Thursday 4th July

SET UP, TAKE DOWN:

This means we have the space for 9 days:

  • Set up will be -  Wednesday 26th June

  • Take down - Thursday 4th July

PRIVATE VIEW:

  • The Private view will be on Thursday evening (27th) from 4pm - 8pm

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC:

  • The exhibition will be open to the public from Thursday 27th June - Wednesday 3rd July

Opening times:

  • Thursday 27th June - 11am - 3pm (private view 4pm - 8pm).

  • Friday 28th June - Wednesday 3rd July - 11am - 5pm.

EXHIBITION COSTS

  • Exhibition cost: to the Crypt (Flint Gallery, front studio and Undercroft) for the 9 days is £900

  • If everyone on the workshops is in the exhibition (54 artists) and pays £25 then we will have about £1,350.

  • This will leave us £450 left from the cost of hiring the space.

  •

  • We will use some of the £450 left over for drinks and nibbles at the private view as well as for any costs incurred around the promotion of the exhibition such as leaflets and posters printed, some social media activity and an advert in the Seaford Scene - other ideas welcome. If there is anything left over we can collectively decide what to do with this

PAYMENT PROCESS:

I have put a list up in the studio for you to tick your name off once you have paid the £25. This can happen via the usual BACS payment method or any other.

BRASSPOINT COLLECTIVE

This year - if all agree we will be Brasspoint Collective. Which just changes the emphasis a bit from the art school to an exhibition of a collective of artists.

more information to follow

More information will appear here as we get closer to the exhibition about preparation of artworks and framing - if you want to see info now please have a look at last years info in drop down menu for links to framers etc.

CHOOSING ARTWORKS FOR THE EXHIBITION

I would say prepare to hang 4 artworks, it is difficult to say exactly how many artworks we can each hang. Some will have small artworks and some large.

It is your choice what appears in the exhibition and it doesn't need to be artwork produced in the weekly classes.

FROM NOW TO THE EXHIBITION

Everyone has work that would look good in the exhibition and we have just over 7 weeks to produce extra work.

During this seven weeks we will continue to generally focus on developing the idea of getting people in artworks but you may decide you want to spend the time on landscapes, still life or a mix - this is up to you and I will discuss with you individually on this basis. We have plenty of reference in the studio and on Pinterest and of course you can develop your ideas from your own reference.

PREPARING YOUR ARTWORK

WHICH ARTWORKS TO CHOOSE

I hope to confirm with everyone individually, before our half term, which artworks you would like in the exhibition and what size. This will also allow you to prepare the frames/mounts etc in good time.

FRAMING OPTIONS

  • I would recommend getting readymade frames - this means preparing the artwork and mount to standard sizes. Bespoke framing can be very expensive.

  • Seawhites - I can get very good prices for these - see right of page - Have a look at their website:

MOUNTS

I recommend using Eastbourne Framing Centre

If you are not sure how to size a mount please check with me and we can prepare the correct size.

www.eastbourneframingcentre.co.uk

Fotobox in Seaford will make mounts to the correct size. They will cut to size but as an idea of cost an A3 mount would be £6.50 and an A2 mount would be £11.

www.fotobox.co.uk

Frames from the The Range come with mounts so worth looking at these.

GICLEE PRINTING

If you have Giclee prints you can include a surround area on the print instead of having a separate mount - ask Mike for clarification on this, I can help you prepare artworks in Photoshop.

WHERE TO GET A GICLEE PRINT

Giclee prints can be prepared here printed at Harwood Printmakers www.harwoodking.com

PRINTING CARDS TO SELL

There are online sites where you can get artworks prepared but Tansley's Printers is a very good and helpful local printer for digital runs. A few artists in the group used them over the last year with excellent results.

Have a look at their website to get an idea of costs. Please also discuss with me if you are interested in having cards printed.

www.tansleysprinters.co.uk

Others recently also used an online printer  Art4site.co.uk online very good results - the colour was an excellent match to the original. Please note that there is a significant cost for delivery - so worth checking this at the strt of the process.

PREPARING INFO FOR THE COMPANY YOU GET TO MAKE YOUR MOUNTS

Below is an example of how to plan your mount size. I will explain as well in class.

BUILD UP TO THE EXHIBITION

EXHIBITION LEAFLETS

A5 LEAFLET

I will have 500 A5 leaflets printed for the exhibition ready on the week starting 10th June. We can distribute around and about.

I will attached the leaflet here when ready.

PREPARATION

WIRE OR STRING ACROSS THE BACK OF YOUR ARTWORK

Because of the hanging system at the crypt all artworks will need wire or string across the back. You may have this supplied with your frame. If not I have all the bits required for this in the studio to prepare.

LABELLING THE ARTWORKS

This is the format we have used in previous exhibitions. This is only a guide and you can of course decide to do it another way.

  • Your name

  • Title of artwork

  • Medium used

  • Price

We attache the labels to the wall with only masking tape so as not to damage the paintwork of the gallery.

LABELS IN THE STUDIO

I will have a pack of labels in the studio for artists to write out during classes well before the exhibition. I will take these into the gallery on setup day (Wednesday 26th June) and place under your artworks.

I will also have an example of how we could write these in the studio.

WHAT TO TITLE YOUR ARTWORK

  • If your artworks have any local connection then I would say it is good value to include in the title

  • It could be descriptive of the artwork content or it could be something that is about the expressionistic feeling of the artwork.

  • Some artists title their artworks - 'untitled', this stops the viewer being directed by the title, this sometimes used for abstract work.

  • I am happy to discuss possible title ideas with you in the run up the the exhibition

COSTING YOUR WORK - YOU MAY DECIDE TO SHOW YOUR WORK

WITHOUT PUTTING A PRICE ON IT

If you do decide to price your work this is always a difficult process. How to address it:

  • How much has the artwork cost to put together (not including your time). So for example if it has a mount and is framed and that cost £40 then a starting point is to double that and then work from there

  • From there it is a judgement that may include the venue - Crypt Gallery, Seaford, a community art gallery - there might be a different expectation of price than if it was in a gallery in Brighton or London.

  • These are difficult judgements to make and there is no right or wrong conclusion. You end up getting a feel for what seems right in different circumstances.

THE WEEK OF THE EXHIBITION

SETTING UP THE GALLERY (Wednesday 26th June is set up day) - a group of artists have volunteered to help hang the exhibition on the Wednesday. Although all are very welcome along to see the progress or help on the day.

DISPLAY OF ARTWORK

Artists’ artwork may not be together in the gallery space. The salon style hang will allow us to get as much artwork in the space as possible. Only non-paper artworks will be displayed down in the crypt.

DISPLAY CRADLES

There will be a couple of display cradles in the gallery so artists can display extra work that can be browsed through. I have plenty of A3 and A2 cellophane sleeves in the studio so artworks are protected.

GETTING YOUR ARTWORK TO THE GALLERY

Please make sure your artworks are at the gallery on the Wednesday morning (26th June) between 11am and 12.30pm. If you can't get there yourself please arrange for them to be delivered or as a last resort they can be left with me at the studio to take in (this would need to be a last resort due to available space and time).

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO MANAGE THE EXHIBITION DURING THE WEEK

A rota sheet is now on the studio wall for artists to volunteer to spend time managing the gallery during the exhibition (also on bottom of page here for reference). At least 2 artists are needed for each session which are 11am-2pm and 2pm-5pm (although the Thursday afternoon slot is only 2pm-3pm due to the Private View starting at 4pm.

Please text or email if you would like to take one of the time slots or fill in during the week in the studio.

2 artists are needed for each morning and each afternoon time slots.

Morning is 11am - 2pm

Afternoon is 2pm - 5pm

The role of the volunteers is to greet visitors and process any purchases. There will be a payment system and I will prepare a guide to the process that will be in the studio and will be in the gallery to look at. We can also go through this in classes the week before the exhibition.

PAYMENT SYSTEM

The payment system we use is SumUp - this allows people to pay via contactless cards or phones or inserting into the device. We will also have a float for cash payments. There will be pro forma to keep a record of payments to artists. I will show everyone how to use the payment system and there will be an info sheet at the gallery as a reminder.

THE PRIVATE VIEW

I will forward an email invite to all over the next 2 weeks so you can forward this onto your guests. The PV is from 4pm - 8pm. We have spread it over this time so there will be space for the number of guests who, we hope, will come at different times across the 4 hours.
