A LEVEL/YR/1

A LEVEL / WEEK 4 / URBAN SPACES / PART 2 SPACE AND SHADOW

TO DO:

Looking at the reference below I want you to find an actual place (photos you have or photos taken or something found online) or amalgam of elements - ie an invented space. This is not about drawing and painting exactly what is there but making compositional adjustments and additions or subtractions for the sake of the artwork - for drama, style and impact - with plenty of angles and perspective.

You will see in the artworks below how important the shadows are along with the tonal values - the light and the dark areas. The composition is also critical - including how the shapes work with the edge of the canvas - remember similar comments on the Beata Chrzanowska project.

Remember as artists we can mess with colour.

Also think about the surfaces - how will you render these. The examples immediately below are flat colour further down the page there is more texture on the surfaces of the example. Please also follow the link on Pinterest below for further examples.

Any thoughts or questions please don't hesitate to drop me a note - thanks Mike

Additional thoughts:

Although I have said we will return to the Quotidian text when we are in the studio it is of course possible for you to direct the perspective and built environment exercise towards that project. Thinking about the idea of SPACE & PLACE can develop from your initial text.

My own experiments around my Quotidian text - 'Everyday Electric' that I read out, would take me to thinking about the structures of the small towns and buildings of the American West and even the amazing facades of the film sets for all those Western films - perhaps in combination with the architecture of an industrial northern town!

PINTEREST BOARD:

I have put a Pinterest board together on my Brasspoint site called simply 'Buildings'. You will notice differences here in using 1 point and 2 point perspective.
